Learn What End Mills Are Usually Used For And What They Are

With increasing technology in our world comes major advances in industry. The milling industry is one of the many affected industry with recent developments building on the conventional machinery to make them more efficient and producing better products.

Among such developments is the arrival of end mills. End mills are a sort of cutting tool that are used for milling purposes. It has a number of parallels with rotary tools but while a rotary tool can simply cut in an axial path an end mill can cut in all directions.

Currently there are a couple of different types of end mills, that include;

- Ball ends. These are actually used in milling of die holes and fillets, sockets and sphere based holes.

- Flutes. They are characterized with helix trimming edges on the end mill and the most commonly utilized are the 4 and 2 groove end mills.

- Double end. These are cutter machines that have end mill teeth on both edges. Their holders must allow sufficient gap to allow for the use of a double edged cutter.

- Stub length. When heavy feeds are needed to reduce tool deflection, these end mills are utilized and are going to produce a shallow slot.

The operating surface that you are using will likely require the end mill to be at a 90 degree angle for optimum trimming. This is how a greater number of the applications of end mills will be used, but in case you require something a little bit more non-traditional there may be adjustments made.

Essentially, the job generally done will be with the material being pushed around the cutting teeth as it stays motionless. Before the cutting takes place, calculations will be made so that the cut depth, metal removal rate and cut length are figured out for optimal use by the machine operator.

Milling cutters are of various kinds and forms. It is not wise to use different end mills for the application which they are not intended for. They are designed to do a certain task and should be used for that task only.

The type of end mill that will be used for an application depends on which type of material is being trimmed. Most end mills are made from tungsten carbide that makes them tremendously long lasting and hard for cutting really hard surfaces.

Likewise, the tips are typically coated with various other substances to significantly reduce deterioration on the end mills and prolong use.
