My Experiences On Twitter Marketing

By Kyle Page

Several years ago, there was a huge campaign on Twitter marketing tools. Twitter was viewed as a great new way of getting a list of people whom you could target to market your products. Cutting through the hype, just what sort of results can you expect after making use of these Twitter marketing tools? We shall now discuss Twitter marketing and whether or not it is worth your time and expense as part of your internet marketing tactic.

I was one of those who wanted to see if getting a large following on Twitter was going to help my product promotion campaigns and so bought the tools. I ended up purchasing and signing up for programs that would get me followers and programs that would essentially advertise my products for me. In all, I ended up purchasing about eight different programs that would assist me with all of this.

One of these tools was an automatic 'people follower' on Twitter with the aim that some of those people would follow me also. If anyone was not following me, I had another program that would automatically delete them from my to-follow list. This would let me follow various individuals once again to get them to follow me. On top of some other software that are not really worth mentioning, I bought a program that would automatically take my blog posts and automatically Tweet them as soon as they were published on my blog.

Initially, I was really happy with the end results after using the programs in combination since they really delivered on what they promised. However, my excitement was quickly squashed when I realized that I wasn't pulling in any money. My strategy was to post several blog entries every day and each of them was then sent straight to display on Twitter. Then I found a way to have all the blog posts done for me automatically, believing that the more posts I would have the more people who would see them.

The results of my Twitter marketing efforts are: Applying this strategy over three years generated nearly 10,000 people following me on Twitter. I bet you think this is an impressive number, but that's not the complete story: In the same 3 year period, my Twitter account accumulated over 15,000 blog posts that had links to my affiliate promotions.

My blog posts showing on Twitter was the only type of advertising for that blog I did and to test the effectiveness of Twitter I did not even ping new posts as they were published. Exactly how 'good' it was rapidly became plain: after 3 years just two affiliate sales pulled in $46.74 plus another $9.10 for Adsense. With just 2 - 4 visits per day coming from Twitter, perhaps this is not surprising.

In short, having approximately ten thousand followers on Twitter using all these programs will not give you the results you want. In fact, in the last 3 years I have not even pulled in good money from that blog to pay for the Twitter programs that I had paid for. So from my perspective, while there may be good ways to promote on Twitter, investing in the automatic softwares are not the way to go.
