Unending Strategies For Email Newsletters That Sell

By Mitali Deypurkaystha

E-commerce website owners all know how imperative email and marketing is when it comes to increasing sales. But most business men and women find it hard writing interesting emails for their email marketing campaign. They understand that regular contact with their subscribers is important, but they worry that their emails are too sales orientated and will ultimately annoy their subscribers.

In previous articles I have taught you how to write subject lines that get emails opened and how to write email openers that virtually force your subscribers to read through your entire email. Today I am going to teach you how to create the 'body' content of your emails. This is the bulk of the email content and it is the final part of the jigsaw when it comes to the success of your email follow up messages.

There are three key items needed in the content of your emails.

1) Trust needs to be slowly created between you and your subscribers. They need to have a relationship with you.

2) Your email must educate. If you send out emails that help your subscribers get closer to their goal through understanding of your industry and niche you will be helping them get to the point when they are ready to buy what you have to sell.

3) Market your products Ultimately, the point of your email campaign is to sell, there really is no point in building a list otherwise! The key point is not to appear too sales orientated.

The following step-by-step plan will help you to write emails that are informative,, educational and allow your readers to build trust in you......whilst also advertising your products.

STEP ONE Google Alerts is a free service where you can receive daily news related to your industry / products. Sign up at http://www.google.com/alerts. An example can be a men's designer clothing website. How about setting up an alert for 'men's fashion'?

STEP TWO When Google sends you the email with links to the latest news visit the news stories, videos, blogs and so on have a look through the stories and see which stories could be linked to your subscribers dreams, goals and fears.

Example: If you owned a web site selling men's designer clothes you could look for stories related to male celebrities who have worn clothing that looks stylish and is getting good press.

STEP THREE Write a short synopsis for one of these news items

STEP FOUR One of the points of an email campaign, as you read above, is to build trust between your subscriber and you. Do not copy the article word for word. Instead re-write the article with your own voice. Nothing feels more personal than your own take on an article. Go back to your subscribers issues and objectives. How will this article help your subscriber in their objectives and issues?

For example, sticking with the men's fashion web site... 'The ripped, faded jeans Brad Pitt wore at the film premier really looked great with his white shirt and dark shoes combo. Brad's been voted the sexiest man alive numerous times and has to look the part. He certainly did with this simple but stylish outfit'.

STEP FIVE Now it is imperative you link the article to your own merchandise, choosing the items carefully so they are related to the article. By doing this you are tapping into your subscribers needs and wants, and giving them what they desire.

E.g. 'OK, OK, looking like Mr Pitt will involve copious amounts of plastic surgery! But you can emulate his fashion sense. Click here for the perfect blazer www.yourlink.com and also a selection of our designer jeans www.youlink.com.'

STEP SIX Return back to 'informing' mode. You don't want your emails to come across as aggressively marketing your products, so try not to finish with a promotion. Instead add a small paragraph to sum up your email.

Example: We can't promise you Mr Pitt's lifestyle and career, but with very little work you can recreate his fantastic sense of style. See you next issue! The Men's Trends Brigade.'

Using stories related to your niche is just one way to come up with ideas for your newsletter content. Other ways are seasonal content, such as writing about Christmas and linking it to your Xmas sale, personal experiences and anecdotes and much more. Using Google Alerts to have content ideas sent to you though is a great place to start.
