Web Hosting Through Your Web Designer - A Disastrous Combination

By C. Rodriguez

The average person looking to a website designed doesn't know the first thing about owning their own website. So when a web designer, who is very knowledgeable in this field offers a web design and hosting package, it sounds like a logical bundle of products to purchase. But having both your web designer also handle your hosting could be a recipe for disaster.

Nine times out of ten, when your web designer offers to host your website, they are a re-seller for another web hosting company " aka they are the middleman." We generally don't like dealing with the middle man in almost everything else I life, so why should your business' web presence be any different?

In the event that you do decide to purchase your web hosting from your web designer, here is a scenario of the process you will go through when your website is in need of technical support: 1 - You contact your designer with the issue. 2 - Your web designer must read your support issue (hopefully promptly), and contact his or her web hosting company with the problem. 3 - The web hosting company receives the support issue, addresses the problem and contacts your designer with a solution. 4 - Your designer contacts you. By purchasing your web hosting through a middleman, you add two additional steps to the tech support process. Two steps that can cost your business unnecessarily downtime, resulting in loss of business.

Then there is the issue of integrity. What happens if your designer/host stops paying their hosting bills? You are left with no access to your website, and wouldn't even be able to move it to a different server. Your website backups are probably kept by your host, who has now disappeared off the face of the earth (and if they stop paying for hosting, believe me they will fall off the face of the earth to you.)

There are many other situations that can happen to your website when it is hosted by your web designer instead of a hosting company. I have only touched on a few to make you aware of the scenarios that may happen if you decide to go this route.

You can avoid all of the issues listed above, simply by purchasing your own web hosting. Your costs will be lower than going with a middleman who is trying to make money by reselling services. You also have direct access to the company who has access to the servers your website is on, making technical issues very quick and easy to resolve. And most importantly, you can allow your designer to do what they were hired to do - create your website, and that is all. You can make your own updates or hire someone else to update the site and/or make enhancements without fear of offending your designer and having your site taken down.

Your company's online presence is very important. Before you get yourself in a bad situation where your site is left in the hands of someone else, do your research about reputable web hosting companies.
