Dealing with Flood Damage in Your Home

By Hedrick Lepsch

The Christmas season is a beautiful time of year. It often means snow covered mountains, colorful Christmas decorations-both inside and outside-and the Christmas spirit.

Moving into a new area will present you with a wide variety of new changes. You should understand how to make these changes and get settled in your area to ensure that you are going to be able to lead a safe and happy life in your new home.

After the flood water subsides, then you can start focusing on how you are going to repair, rebuild and recover. The restoration process can be difficult and may require a professional, so do not be afraid to call a professional if you feel that you are in over your head.

You just have to walk into another's house to notice that some things are similar, but there are very many things that are different. Most everyone uses a form of Christmas lights for instance. They wrap the tree. They adorn the walls. They cover the roof.

If you have time to move things in your home, start by moving your moveable appliances upstairs. Get your television sets, computers, stereos or even your microwave upstairs to ensure that they have the best chance of avoiding contact with the water.

It can be tempting to see if the power still works when there is no longer floodwater in your home. It can be very dangerous to turn on your power before an electrician has inspected your home to ensure that you are going to be safe when you turn on the power.

The important thing is decorating safely. The last thing you want your home to turn into is ash. Instead, keep it standing and beautiful with the right dcor. Whenever you purchase lights, make sure they are tested in a laboratory.

Once you are out of your home, you may find that there are many people on the roads looking to get out of their homes as well. It is important that you do not drive around barricades that have been put up to direct traffic in your area.

As you are cleaning and disinfecting your home you should protect your skin from the flood water and the damage that the flood water has done. While you clean, you should be sure that you have long sleeves, gloves and even a mask on.

Don't place anything flammable near or above it. Never put them in the tree, even though they would look beautiful there. Keep them in stable holders. Hot wax can start a fire just as easily as a flame.

Making a plan for a flood may not seem like a necessity now, but should there ever be a flood you will be glad that you had a plan. Take time to make your plan as you are getting settled to ensure that you and your family will be safe in your home.
