Penguin And Panda: Google's Innovations Are Beastly Algorithms

By Celine Nguyen

Inside the zoo, animals run safe and happy. Various animal species are nursed so that spectators can fully appreciate the beauty of the animal residents.

The concept of a zoo is currently related to the world's leading search engine, Google. Google's amusement for black and white creatures is beginning to be the butt of jokes in the SEO world. In fact, many SEO minds, particularly those thoroughly upset and shocked by Google's recent releases, is calling Google the new zoo because of its fixation on animals like Penguin and Panda.

Interestingly, Google's Penguin and Panda are not your typical creatures! These creatures aren't residing in online jungles to please SEO spectators, marketers and optimisers. They mean serious business to Google's advocacy. In fact, these algorithm updates are specifically designed to eradicate the proliferation of spammy websites and eradicate the growth of web entities that engage in dishonest SEO tactics.

Released in 2011, the Panda update's aim was to end the population of crappy websites that supported the use of plagiarised, highly unreadable content. It conveyed a painful blow to these low quality websites, painful and strong enough to send them crashing down Google SERPs. Targeting 12 percent of listings at that time, Google Panda was perceived to be a success in eliminating sites that didn't revere the importance of good content.

The Penguin update in 2012 accentuated Google's desire to focus the spotlight on high quality, authority sites and online brands. Affecting 3 percent of listings, Google Penguin penalised websites that were guilty of black hat SEO techniques such as link buying, link scheming, keyword stuffing and cloaking and eradicated the prevailing notion that overly optimised websites acquired better rankings.

Penguin and Panda may have earned the ire of some SEOs and optimisers, but Google remains steadfast in its advocacy of concluding black hat SEO practice. The search engine market leader has even conveyed its unfaltering commitment to bring more value to its users.
